*A note about vegetable tanned leather: while leather is a “natural’ material and an inevitable bi-product of the meat industry, chemicals used in the conventional chromium process are extremely detrimental to both the environment and the folks who work in tanneries. Maybe you’ve heard of vegan leather is an alternative. While vegan leather may be more of an ethical option for the sake of animals, most on the market are made with liquefied polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) – essentially plastic, and NOT AT ALL good for the environment. The good news is better technologies are emerging for alternative leather. Meanwhile, vegetable tanned leather is an exceptional option if you gravitate towards the rich flexibility of natural leather but prefer an eco-friendly purchase. Makers + Holm will always opt for quality upcycled leather when available. Products made with our vegetable tanned leather are sourced through a New England supplier with responsible business practices.
